The hidden infrastructure of culture.

September 5, 2026

The arts ecosystem depends on a vast network of support systems that make cultural work possible, often operating quietly in the background and becoming visible only when something breaks down. From advocacy and technical assistance to shared resources, convening, research, and connection, these forms of support are essential infrastructure for a healthy and resilient arts sector. Yet the organizations doing this work can themselves remain largely unseen.

If we believe that culture is infrastructure, then the systems that sustain culture deserve recognition and visibility too. Arts Service Organizations (ASOs) play a critical role in supporting the organizations, artists, and communities that make up the broader ecosystem. By sharing publicly accessible knowledge about this “hidden infrastructure,” we can make these connections easier to see, strengthen the networks that hold the field together, and help build a more sustainable future for the arts.

SURVEY PARTNER SPOTLIGHT

This week we are spotlighting Voices of Creative New York (VCNY) and Mid-Atlantic Arts. Our Survey Partners are helping make this research a reality and ensuring that the 2026 National ASO Survey captures a richer, more representative picture of the sector.
